Purpose

The Enchanted Object exercise serves as a playground for your imagination, encouraging you to explore the depths of fairy tale creation. From crafting characters with rich backstories to building fantastical worlds where magic comes to life, each step is an opportunity to hone your storytelling skills.

Step 1: Object Introduction

Select the Object: Choose a magical object that will play a central role in your fairy tale. This could be anything from a mysterious mirror to a talking book or a unique piece of jewelry. Define its appearance and the type of magic it possesses.

Step 2: Setting & Characters

Setting Description: Establish the setting for your fairy tale. Is it set in a magical realm, a medieval kingdom, or a modern city with fantastical elements? Consider how the setting complements the enchantment of the chosen object.

Main Character Introduction: Introduce the main character who discovers the enchanted object. Provide details about their background, aspirations, and any challenges they may be facing in their current life.

Step 3: Object’s Magic & Powers

Magic Description: Define the magical abilities of the object. Does it grant wishes, reveal hidden truths, or have the power to transport the user to different realms? Be specific about how its magic works.

Step 4: Conflict Introduction

Conflict Setup: Introduce a conflict or challenge that prompts the main character to seek out the enchanted object. This could be a personal struggle, a threat to the kingdom, or a mystery that needs solving.

Step 5: Object’s History & Origin

History & Origin: Create a backstory for the enchanted object. Where did it come from? Who created it, and why? Uncover the object’s past and its significance in the broader context of the fairy tale world.

Step 6: Secondary Characters

Supporting Characters: Introduce supporting characters who will aid or hinder the main character’s quest for the enchanted object. Consider their roles, motivations, and how they contribute to the overall narrative.

Step 7: Themes

Identify Themes: Identify overarching themes you want to explore in your fairy tale. Themes could include the consequences of desire, the power of self-discovery, or the balance between magic and responsibility.

Step 8: Journey & Challenges

Journey Outline: Outline the main character’s journey to find and interact with the enchanted object. Include challenges, obstacles, and moments of growth along the way.

Step 9: Resolution

Resolution Plan: Plan how the main character will use the enchanted object to resolve the conflict. Consider the lessons learned, sacrifices made, and the impact on the characters and the world.

Step 10: Writing Session

Start Writing: Begin writing your fairy tale, starting with the introduction of the enchanted object and the main character. Allow the narrative to unfold as the character embarks on their journey, encountering magical elements and facing challenges.

Step 11: Editing & Refinement

Review & Refine: Review your draft, focusing on coherence, character development, and the integration of magical elements. Refine the language and pacing to enhance the overall reading experience.
